Installing a GSM Modem for SMS Usage
This document describes the steps required to install a GSM modem to be used with the ExtraFax Server. Some hints for troubleshooting are also included in this document.
Installation
ExtraFax server requires a GSM modem to send and receive SMS.
A GSM modem can be:
- an external modem device, e.g. Nokia 30.
- a GSM PC card, e.g. a Nokia card phone.
- a supported GSM mobile phone with the appropriate cable and software drivers to connect to a USB/serial port on the computer where ExtraFax server is installed.

Troubleshooting
- SMS channel does not start up properly...
- Check whether there are any ExtraFax error messages showing on the Domino / ExtraFax consoles.
- Check whether you can connect to the GSM modem with Microsoft HyperTerminal and get the expected response.

- Make sure there are no other applications or system services occupying the GSM modem, e.g. Microsoft Fax service, Routing and Remote Access service (RAS) or Domino server.
- SMS channel has started up properly, but fails to send or receive SMS messages...
- Check whether there are any ExtraFax error messages showing on the Domino / ExtraFax consoles.
- Enable ExtraFax Detail Trace Log feature. For details, please refer to the "Enable ExtraFax Detail Trace Log" section in this Installation Guide.
- Try searching for a solution in the ExtraFax FAQ section and Support Forum.
